Exploring other Search Engines

Stating the obvious, when using a search engine, most people use Google as their default tool. Believe it or not, there are so many alternatives to find different subsets of data that potentially might not be indexed on Google.

In this session, I will introduce a few favorites and will show you how they work and give you awareness to explore other search engines in existence.

After this session you will:

  1. Have a new arsenal of active and little used search engines with the playbook on how and when to use them
  2. My specific workflow for each search engine
  3. An understanding of how to use each search engine to target and connect with your key prospects
  4. An easy and refreshing source to use when you are stuck with no prospects to present to your hiring managers

The New Rules of Facebook: Finding Candidates AND Google Custom Search Engines

Shally Steckerl

We'll dive deep into Facebook - leveraging areas of the social site that are not public or found on the FB interface.

During this session, industry pioneer Shally Steckerl will show you how to use the latest search techniques with Facebook's most recent changes to commands and Graph Search. In addition we are going to dive deep in Google Custom Search Engines (CSE's).

This is one of Shally's most popular hands on workshops.

Come prepared to build your very own custom CSE to target you very hardest candidates to find.

Google custom search engines are an amazing way to focus and limit your searches to just the relevant databases. Just want to search Github, Stackoverflow, and Hacker News? Create a custom search engine for that! Trying to narrow down your focus on designers to just Behance and Dribbble. Just eliminate all the other websites and you’re in business.

Dive deep into:

  • A Google Custom Search can x-ray Linkedin, filtering the results based on the primary geographies where you are focusing your search.
  • Add “refinements,” which are small pieces of Boolean code that will allow you to narrow down the results based on specific criteria such as geography, specialty, or file type.
  • Create custom-saved search shortcuts that prompt for keywords so you don’t have to memorize Boolean and other syntax; be more productive with the Favorites and other toolbars, automated search engine alerts.

Find candidates based on:

  • Your key target and personal refinements
  • School/education
  • Work history
  • Geographic location
  • Coworkers
  • Job titles
  • Years of experience
  • NLP - Natural Language

Ben Partain

Ben Partain

RECRUITING IS A PEOPLE BUSINESS

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Ben’s background was in manufacturing and management, overseeing a fleet of 38 subordinates at any given time. Ben lost the majority of his sight in 2003, due to a debilitating disease: Retinal Pigmentosa, and decided it was time for a career change.

Ben participated in of the first ever pilot program in the space of Recruiting and Sourcing for folks with disabilities, which was sponsored by both, The Sourcing Institute Foundation and Project Starfish America, in 2015. He successfully completed the pilot and graduated, receiving his TSIF Diploma in Sourcing & Recruiting.

“Being a Recruiter/Sourcer is possible through technology, I used computer screen magnification and I was able to finish the training, become certified as a graduate and work in the field.” Currently Ben and his wife, Rhonda, are well established entrepreneurs, helping individuals find employment!

Melissa Shaw

Melissa Shaw

I REALLY NEEDED TO EXPAND MY CAREER TRAJECTORY.

At the tender age of 9, Melissa Shaw was diagnosed with a brain tumor which left her visually impaired. Melissa developed a knack for writing code and aspired to a career in web design, however, she was able to find only temporary employment, which frustrated her very much. She was interested in recruiting, especially sourcing and applying her program experience in a completely different way: in finding people, instead of writing code.

The change finally came in 2018 when she participated in the second pilot program sponsored by The Sourcing Institute Foundation, Project Starfish America, the State of Vermont, and Orion Global Talent. She successfully completed the pilot and graduated, receiving her TSI Diploma in Sourcing and Recruiting. Today, Melissa is happily sourcing with Orion Global Talent!

“I also learned many little tips and techniques that would have taken me years to figure out on my own. This training has truly been invaluable to me becoming a sourcer.”

Nasreen Bhutta

Nasreen resides in Toronto, Canada and has a background in Information Technology. She was diagnosed with Retinal Pigmentosa a debilitating eye condition of the retina a few years ago, and as a result realized that she needed to re-launch her career.

Nasreen participated in and project managed the first ever pilot program in the space of Recruiting and Sourcing for folks with Disabilities, which was sponsored by both, Project Starfish America and The Sourcing Institute, in 2015, and successfully graduated and received her accreditation.

Today, Nasreen has been absorbed by the Sourcing Institute Foundation as the Diversity and Inclusion Consultant, and is actively involved in Training, Networking, Program Design and various other functions.

Reka Kiss

Reka Kiss

AS A MILITARY SPOUSE, OUR LIFE IS FULL OF CHANGES.

Reka Kiss is a military spouse currently stationed in a rural area in the Southeast which would normally limit her access to traditional in-office corporate job positions. However, she works with a company, MadSkills, which was founded by military spouses and pairs remote workers with companies. She reached out to the Foundation to improve her sourcing and recruiting skills. “I was very honored to receive the scholarship from TSI and complete the Sourcing and Recruiting Diploma. The diploma has helped me also to have a better understanding about the US market, since I have worked in Europe before.”

Completing the Diploma in Sourcing & Recruiting has enabled her to continue to work in HR and also remotely. One feature of the program that Reka appreciated was the regular progress check-ins that allowed for practice and Q & A sessions. “Through the program they matched a mentor for me, who was very encouraging and always making sure I was on track and could complete it successfully.”
